The medium of dance, like all performance art, is ephemeral. Movement can only be observed and appreciated in a specific moment in time, and you have to be there to see it. But, despite this, many groups of dancers have found ways to record their work and let it continue to live beyond themselves. The Judson Dance Theater is one of these groups. Founded in the early 1960s in New York City, Judson is a collective known as the pioneers of postmodern and minimalist dance. Judson expanded the possibilities for what could even be considered dance in the first place, reframing everyday movement to become art. As one member of Judson put it, their work is “theory in movement.” The identity system for Judson is built around the concept of composition and theory in movement. Using archival dance notations used by members to record their works, I created a typographic system for the logo consisting entirely of a simple arc shape. The repetition of geometric forms is a core technique of minimalist artists, and the solid version expands on the linear logo. Maintaining the historical legacy of the brand was also important, so typewriter lettering was included as an homage to their early flyers, and archival photography from Judson is the foundation for the system. Some images are treated in a “stuttering” technique, which mimics and exaggerates movement in a new way. On untreated images the custom type weaves around the images, as if it’s dancing with them. <img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" additions Ephemeral City is a publication which came about organically during walks around Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where I have lived for the better part of 4 years. I began to notice temporary building numbers throughout the neighborhood, and saw it as a sign of not only the change Williamsburg has faced but the ephemerality of living in New York overall. The City Reliquary is, in a way, a place for these objects to live. A place where, despite how they might be perceived in the outside world, these objects aren’t useless trash. They have educational and historical value, and it is important to treasure these objects and show what came before what we take for granted today. Founded in 2002, The City Reliquary is a community-based museum located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Reliquaries are traditionally vessels housing the bones of dead saints; however The City Reliquary houses the bones of old New York. The museum is comprised of unique artifacts from all corners of the city, as well as collections from various community members. This branding project aims not to erase the unique character of the institution but rather magnify it, by adding new graphics on top of what already exists. The logo is inspired by the fact that almost everything in the museum might be considered trash, but within the greater collection is very valuable and significant. Imagine a dynamic and fluid entity, free from predetermined functions and rigid boundaries. It's like a canvas waiting to be filled with limitless possibilities, where creativity and exploration can take center stage. By shedding the constraints of conventional organization, a body without organs invites us to reimagine the very essence of existence, encouraging a boundless and uncharted journey of self-discovery and expression. These material aspects also reference elements of ballet, literally tying the book together. Focused on her first three films, these records are for The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, and Lost in Translation, three of Coppola's most beloved movies.
